SO GOOD- I would think he'd run out of interesting ways for sharks to eat people, but nope, lol. I adore these books and this author- I've read a lot of his work and I've never been disappointed. He keeps me fully engaged and riveted to the story and really rooting for (or against) characters that are well built out and creates a sense of reality that I very much enjoy. I can't say that I'll ever tire of these books or this author- he is for me right up there with the great Stephen King. I'm an avid reader, devouring several books, sometimes a few at the same time- and this book really took over my devoted reading times and then some.Product details

The Trench Meg Book 2 edition by Steve Alten Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I am a huge Steve Alten fan and a big fan of the MEG books. I have read them twice now and I just finished The Trench again. I loved The Trench. It seemed to me like there was always something going on. I like a lot of action in books to keep me interested. The first MEG was very good and this book, The Trench was right up there with it.
Although there were some unbelievable things that happened in it but it is fiction. But I don't think it really took away from the book.
I have recommended the MEG books to many friends and they have all enjoyed them. Kudos to Steve Alten and his amazing writing skills. Keep the coming. Thanks for reading.
Rarely do sequels outperform their predecessor, but in the case of Steve Alten's "The Trench," I think that the sequel is much better than the original. Not that "Meg" was a bad novel. In fact, I loved it. But "The Trench" seems to be better in that Alten seems to have grown as a writer.
This time around, there isn't just a prehistoric killer on the loose. This time we have international scandal, terrorists(including Osama bin Laden), spies, double-crosses, marital problems, etc. Not to mention that Angel, the original Meg's offspring, has decided to break free of the Tanaka Institute and head back home to the Mariana Trench.
The sinister Benedict Singer is the perfect villain in this book. I'm not giving anything away by stating this, because it is obvious right from the start that he is up to no good. Dr. Jonas Taylor returns, so does Mac, Terry, Masao and the AG II. A few new characters, namely the seductive and sexy Celeste, are also thrown into the chaos.
This book is much more suspenseful than the original, and the entire focus isn't on just capturing Angel, but all of the aforementioned problems as well.
Much like the original, the action is fast-paced and bloody. There is definitely a higher body count in this one, and the introduction of another prehistoric killing machine as well.
If you enjoyed the first "Meg" book, you'll definitely fall in love with "The Trench." I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Alten. I also recommend it to anyone who loves creature features, mystery, sci-fi, and adventure tales.
Did not care for some of the plot that came with this, but the author was very smart to toss in a little of the backstory to bring you up to date for this one. Will read more of his books after reading the first two "Megs"
Liked the first book and liked this one enough to probably get the next one too, if only to see where the series go. Getting a bit repetitive although I understand that's somewhat necessary for a first time reader of the books. But please, please, please enough with the ampullai of lorenzini!!! Clearly the authors favorite shark fact as it manages to get squeezed onto every other page.
With the movie, The Meg, soon to be released in theaters, I decided to read this next novel in line. Prepare to be amazed. Angel is back and just as mean as ever. Bodies will be flying everywhere and you’ll find yourself skimming pages so fast you’ll have to go back to reread the text to make sure you caught everything. I hope this will become the sequel to the new movie.
The sheer scale of the sequel is more ambitious than The Meg, book 1 of the series. While Angel broke away from the lagoon, a chase would ensue and so I expected the hero of the book might very well kill the big fish as he declared. Such declaration would only be valid when he did the deed. So Jonas chased the fish across oceans and failed in his many attempts. But ironically (and surprisingly for me), it was his angel of death that saved his ass.
Just as I thought half through the book and expected the author to give more dragging moments of blind chase, there came the murderous Celeste who got rid of the hideous Singer and so "propelled" the story to move on. With the information of the CIA director, the story finally unfurled further the military used Jonas and his family to get Singer.
I appreciated the twist very much. The explanation from the CIA director solves the mystery of why Jonas was sent to explore the trench a long time ago and by doing so, provides an answer and motive as to why Singer bailed out Masao's company with credulity.
Having said that, the minor flaw lies in some narration where more watchfulness and logicality are needed. In the republished edition of book 1, he managed to revise the story 3 times to make it better; the sequel is in need of such effort.
While the first book had its flaws, it was largely a fast paced and satisfying (with regard to the science and shark attacks) story. There were some issues for me with the writing and descriptions of the characters, and the incessant need to discuss breast size, particularly in the early chapters, was annoying.
However, for all the flaws that were present in The Meg, The Trench actually improves upon. It doesn't simply mimic the first story. It maintains the elements that were fascinating from the first and strengthens the overall character arcs and motivations while also adding new elements.
I would add that there is an attempted rape in here that gets described briefly but vividly. I had mixed feelings about how it was handled, but all in all, I still think that the story was handled well enough to compensate.
